The Katsina:
This Great Horned Owl kachina is popular among Hopi carvers. This Kachina is beneficial to agriculture because he destroys harmful rodents. He symbolizes intelligence
In the Native American tradition of the Kachina, initiated males (those who can dress as Kachinas) grow beans in their kivas. The Kachinas walk in the villages carrying the bean sprouts and bringing gifts to young children. They also act out stories of historical and mythological importance. The Great Horned Owl Kachina leads a group of raiders who punish the Clown Kachinas for un-Hopi like behavior. It appears in several dances, including the Powamuy (Purification ceremony) or the Bean Dance. It is the most complex of the Hopi ceremonies, relating the part of Creation which purifies life. It is not open to the public.
