Florence Aragon Classic Acoma Parrot/Band Pottery
This marvelous olla is hand made and hand painted by Rachel Aragon from the Acoma pueblo. It shows the famous Acoma parrot, along with undulating bands above and below the bird figure, and floral elements. Florence is well known to collectors of Acoma pottery and her creations are highly sought after. Like her sisters, Rachel is making less and less pottery these days and I am fortunate to be able to bring this impressive piece to collectors.
Florence is of the Eagle Clan and was taught to make pottery by her mother, Lupe Aragon. She specializes in hand coiled, hand painted, pit fired pottery featuring complex designs and often images of parrots, flowers, deer with heart lines and spirals. She was born in 1929 and started making pottery in the late 1940's. Her work is widely collected and increasingly hard to find. She has won major awards at the New Mexico State Fair and the Santa Fe Indian Market and is considered one of today's outstanding potters.
The pot measures 9 inches tall by 10 inches wide.
