Rachel Sahmie Dragonflies Hopi Pottery

Rachel Sahmie was born in 1956 into the highly talented Nampeyo family. Her mother is Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo and her siblings and cousins include some of the best-known names in pueblo pottery (Nyla, Jean, Randy, Andrew, Foster, & Finkle Sahmie and Bonnie Chapella Nampeyo are her siblings, and Les Naminga is her cousin). Rachel has been potting since 1970. Some of her favorite designs include migration, eagle wings and tail feathers, rain, feathers, butterflies, Kachina designs and hummingbirds. References to her work can be found in Gregory Schaaf's Hopi-Tewa Pottery: 500 Artist Biographies (CIAC Press, Santa Fe, 1998: 144) and Rick Dillingham's Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery (U of NM Press 1994: 14-15). Her work is renowned world-wide and can be found in museum collections including the Heard Museum in Phoenix and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe.

The present seed pot is decorated by dragon flies over a rich, Hopi background. It is 3 inches tall and 6.5 inches in diameter It has no flaws and is signed by Rachel.
