Alvina Yepa Large Sgrafitto Jemez Pottery
Alvina Yepais one of the most sought after Native American pottery artists from the Jemez Pueblo today, and this piece shows why. Alvina is known for making red "melon" pottery that is many times further decorated with sgraffito designs. She has been making pottery for more than 20 years having learned to make pottery from her mother Felipita who taught her the traditional ways of working the clay. All of her pottery is made from clays that she gathers herself from the Jemez Pueblo. She then hand coils, polishes each pot to a beautiful luster and then fires outdoors. Her works are extremely fine and symmetrical in shape. Her incise carving is fabulous and produces crisp uniform images. Alvina is in deed a great artist in the traditions of the best pueblo potters.
This is an extremely elegant sgrafitto vase by Alvina in a very traditional and classic shape. The finish is beautiful and the incised sections, showing feather, kiva step and cloud symbols are perfection. A striking work!
The pot measures 4 1/2 inches tall by 8 1/4 inches in diameter.
