Ida Sahmi: Yei Night Chant (Yeibichai) Hopi Pottery
This is an authentically hand coiled and hand painted bowl by Ida Sahmi a master potter from the Hopi tribe. Ida is actually a Navaho who married into Hopi and has subsequently developed into one of the outstanding potters of our time. Her ability to combine Hopi pottery making with Navaho themes, like her day and night Yei, has made her work among the most sought after in the Southwest. Our offering provides an opportunity to enhance your collection by an outstanding piece of workmanship by a famous artist.
The present pot, a rendering of Yei-bi-chai or Yei Night Chant is decorated with Yei figures in nocturnal environment around the outside surface. This is the famous night-Yei pot by Ida. It is a relatively large piece measures 4.5 inches in height by 4.5 inches in diameter at its widest part. This piece is a must for any serious collector of Hopi pottery.
